In a recent study conducted by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology
it concluded that most people believe that “their dreams reveal meaningful hidden truths”. I can’t say whether or not I’m a believer but the results come as no surprise to me.
Sigmund Freud said the contents in a dream reflect the dreamer’s unconscious mind while Carl Jung said the contents in a dream served as messages to the dreamer and that the dreamer should pay attention for their own good.
I have some pretty messed up dreams so if there’s any message to be learned I don’t want to know what it is. Visually my dreams can be almost hallucinatory with the cast of characters, locations and sword fights changing so often I can hardly follow the story.
I read that during most dreams, the person dreaming is not aware that they are dreaming, no matter how absurd or eccentric it may be. When I was very young I knew when I was dreaming. If I wanted to wake up from my dream I would close my eyes and I’d soon be awake. Unfortunately it rarely worked with nightmares. If I was stuck in the middle of a nightmare I was screwed. I remember closing my eyes like a mad man trying to get the heck out of there.
Sometimes I think it would be cool if I knew how to get out of a real boring dream. I could just scroll through my dreams like some sort of cerebral TV remote until I hit a good show that I want to watch.
Well, I’m going to sleep now… I hope there’s something good on tonight.
